3rd level academic degrees (PhD, DPhil, EdD)

In addition to the fully completed application form (including postal and phone contact details) and signed by the applicant with a handwritten signature, the following are required:

  • A verified and authenticated copy of the original academic degree, legalized with an Apostille by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The verification and authentication can only be done by a British Notary Public. (NOTE: The notary must explicitly state the verification of the degree and the accreditation of the issuing institution, with wording such as, “I certify that the academic degree is authentic and that I, the notary, have verified it with the issuing institution,” in English or Italian).
  • A simple (non-certified) translation of the PhD diploma, which can be done by the applicant or a third party. Note: Only the degree certificate itself (the diploma) needs to be translated into Italian. Moreover, the translation must keep the name of the university, the degree title (e.g., Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, etc.), the field of study if present (e.g., Business Management, International Relations, Biology, etc.), the grade if present (e.g., First Class Honours, Second Class Honours Upper Division, Merit, etc.), and the faculty name if applicable (e.g., Faculty of Arts and Humanities) in English.
  • Original University Letter/Diploma Supplement, or alternatively, a verified, authenticated, and legalized copy with an Apostille by the FCDO. This document must confirm the following: name, surname, date of enrollment, discipline in which the PhD was obtained, the minimum legal duration of the course (also known as “minimum official length” or “minimum period of study”), thesis title, and whether the applicant was admitted based on a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree/Italian Laurea or equivalent qualification (specifying which degree and from which university). If the letter does not include this last detail, please include a copy of the qualification with which you were admitted to the PhD (copy of the degree certificate if it is an Italian qualification).
  • A pre-paid and pre-addressed Special Delivery envelope (A4 size) to the address where you would like to receive the Declaration of Value, the authenticated translation, and the original documents. If you wish to receive the Declaration of Value in Italy or another foreign address, do not include any envelope. Instructions on how to arrange a courier collection at the Consulate at your own expense will be provided via email during the processing of your request.
