If an Italian citizen dies abroad, the event must be registered in the Italian civil registry. The death of foreign citizens must also be registered, if they were married or in a civil partnership with an Italian citizen who is still alive.
The death certificate can be submitted directly to the deceased person’s Comune AIRE (or, if the deceased was a foreign national, to the Comune AIRE of their Italian spouse). Please note that in this case, you should follow the instructions provided by the Comune and the Consulate cannot certify the accuracy of the translation.
Alternatively, if the deceased person resided in our consular district, the application for registration may be made through the Consulate. An application can be made by posting the documents listed below to:

Required documents
- Application for registration form;
- Death certificate, depending on the country where the death occurred:
- in the United Kingdom: original Extract of an Entry in the Registers of Deaths, apostilled and translated into Italian;
- in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, or Turkey: original multilingual death certificate (under the 1976 Vienna Convention);
- in other Countries: original death certificate, legalised and translated into Italian;
- Photocopy of an ID document of the applicant;
- Photocopy of the Italian passport and identity card of the deceased person (or, if unavailable, a foreign ID document);
- Pre-addressed and pre-paid (up to 100g) special delivery envelope, which will be used in the event of the documents being returned.
If you also wish to notify the the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate), e.g. for inheritance purposes, please complete and sign an additional form (ITA – ENG) and include it with your request.
Important information
- All documents must be submitted in original (except ID documents, of which a photocopy is sufficient).
- Incomplete or incorrect applications will be returned to the applicant.
- Registered certificates and their translations must be kept in the Consulate’s archives, so they will not be returned.
- If necessary, the Consulate may request that additional documentation be sent by e-mail.
