Manchester – Starting today, 30th December 2025, the Statistical report “Italians in the Manchester Consular District” is available for download. It is published as a joint initiative of the Consulate of Italy in Manchester and the Comites of Manchester. The publication uses AIRE data to offeran up-to-date overview of the Italian community in the consular district and to provide a common information base for institutions, associations, researchers, media, companies and citizens.
As at 31 December 2024, a total of 120,825 Italians were registered in the constituency, with an average age of 35.5, significantly lower than the national averages in Italy and the UK. The Italian presence is widespread throughout the district, with two main urban centres in Greater Manchester and Birmingham (each with around 28,000 Italian residents) and significant communities in numerous other cities in the Midlands and the North of England. The picture paints a stratified community: from the historic “Little Italy” neighbourhoods to the post-war migration of textile workers, to intra-EU mobility in the 2000s, which was then interrupted by Brexit.
A key finding concerns the comparison between AIRE data and other local statistical sources, which suggests a potential additional pool of approximately 13,000 Italian citizens residing in the district but not yet registered with AIRE.
Further analysis highlights the role of secondary migration in the Italian community in Central and Northern England: almost one in two members comes from non-European Countries (including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria), spending a long period in Italy and acquiring Italian citizenship, followed by relocation to the United Kingdom, often together with their family.
Data on education, professional status and geographical origin describe a heterogeneous migration profile that cannot be attributed to a single social or professional category.
