The Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Benedetto Della Vedova inaugurated today the Consulate of Italy in Manchester, in a ceremony that saw a large presence of British authorities and representatives of the Italian community in the United Kingdom.

Together with the Ambassador of Italy in London, Raffaele Trombetta, the Consul of Italy, Matteo Corradini, and the Director General for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies, Luigi Maria Vignali, Undersecretary Della Vedova highlighted how the consular office in Manchester, the third after those in Edinburgh and London, will make contacts with Italian nationals residing in the north of England easier and more direct. At the same time, this institutional presence in the centre of Great Britain will promote interactions between Italian actors and British authorities, and increase the already excellent cultural, commercial, academic and scientific links.

Meeting later with the representatives of the Italian community, Undersecretary Della Vedova reaffirmed his firm commitment to support Italians in the United Kingdom after Brexit, while Director General Vignali valued the incessant work carried out by the Farnesina and the consular network in recent years, which improved the level of services offered in the Country to almost 500,000 Italians registered with AIRE.

The British Undersecretary for Safe Migration of the Home Office Kevin Foster also took part in the inauguration. With Minister Foster, the Undersecretary Della Vedova had a bilateral meeting where they discussed the importance of protecting the rights of Italian citizens in the Kingdom united under the Withdrawal Agreement, the need to continue facilitating the mobility of their respective students and researchers and the joint effort in favor of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

The Consulate in Manchester will cover the area from Birmingham to the border with Scotland plus the Isle of Man, a constituency that currently has a bit less then 110,000 AIRE members distributed throughout the territory. The consular offices in Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, and Hull will report to this new Consulate.
