Recognition in Italy of British adoption
Two parents (one of which at least is an Italian national with at least two years of continuous residence in the United Kingdom, and registered with AIRE within this Consulate jurisdiction) who have adopted a foreign minor may apply through this Consulate to request to the competent Juvenile Court (that of the last residence of the couple or, if not possible to determine their last residence, that of Rome) the enforcement in Italy of the British adoption measure. Once the effectiveness of the adoption has been declared, the minor will automatically acquire Italian citizenship, as a consequence of the transcription of the adoption measure.
To request the transmission of the application, the following documents have to be submitted:
1. the relevant form, completed, but not signed (as it will be signed in the presence of a Consular officer);
2. proof of residence of the Italian parent(s), proving their residence in this Consulate’s jurisdiction;
3. legalised and translated full birth certificate of the adopted, issued before the British adoption certificate: if the adopted minor was born in the United Kingdom, the "full birth certificate" is required; otherwise, the certificate of the country of origin is required;
4. full British birth certificate, legalized and translated;
5. British adoption decree, legalised and translated.
The documentation must be produced in original and accompanied by photocopy, and sent to the following address:
Consulate of Italy in Manchester - Notary office
58 Spring Gardens - II Floor M2 1EW Manchester
Once the documentation has been reviewed, the applicants will be asked to certify the translations and authenticate the request. At the appointment, both parents must present themselves with a valid ID (passport or ID card). No consular fees apply.
