Recognition of British adoption

Two parents, of whom at least one is an Italian citizen resident in the United Kingdom for at least two continuous years and registered within the AIRE in the Manchester district (Manchester District), who have adopted a foreign minor, may submit a request through this Consulate to the competent “Tribunale per i Minorenni” (Minors Court, the one in the place of the couple’s last residence or, if it is not possible to determine the last residence, the one in Rome) to request the declaration of effectiveness in Italy of the British adoption order.

Once the effectiveness of the adoption is declared, the minor will automatically acquire Italian citizenship through the transcription of the adoption order.

To request the transmission of the application, the following documentation must be submitted:

  1. application form, completed but not signed (it needs to be signed before a consular representative);
  2. proof of residence of the Italian parent (or parents) demonstrating residence in the Italian district of Manchester;
  3. full birth certificate of the adopted child, legalized and translated (Legalisations, apostilles and translations), issued before the British adoption order: if the adopted minor was born in the United Kingdom, a full birth certificate is required; otherwise, a certificate from the country of origin is needed;
  4. full British birth certificate, legalized and translated (Legalisations, apostilles and translations );
  5. British adoption decree, legalized and translated (Legalisations, apostilles and translations ).

The documentation must be sent in original version plus a photocopy to the following address:

Consulate of Italy – SEZIONE NOTARILE

58 Spring Gardens

Manchester M2 1EW

Once the documentation has been verified, applicants will be summoned to certify the translations and authenticate the application. Both spouses must attend with a valid identification document (passport or identity card). No consular fee is required.
